Antitussive Activity of the Water-Extracted Carbohydrate Polymer fromTerminalia chebulaon Citric Acid-Induced Cough

Abstract: Terminalia chebula, a medicinal plant, is widely used in the management of various diseases. As the water extract of its dried ripe fruit is a frequently used preparation, we decided to look for bioactive polysaccharide in this extract. We demonstrate that the obtained polysaccharide fraction, CP, contained a highly branched arabinogalactan protein having a (1 → 3)-, (1 → 6)- and (1 → 3, 6)-linked β-D-Galp together with (1 → 5)- and (1 → 3)-linked α-L-Araf and nonreducing end units of α-L-Araf. This polymer po… Show more

“… 35 The sugars present in triphala include arabinose, galactose, xylose, glucose, mannose, rhamnose, galacturonic acid, and arabinogalactan. 36 , 37 The specific sugars and sugar linkages present in each herbal medicine ultimately dictate which species are able to catabolize and, therefore, metabolize herb glycan components as an energy source.…”

“…The biological activity of other types of medicinal mushroom, in particular the immunomodulatory activity, has been associated with the HMW polysaccharide or polysaccharide–protein complex found in the mushroom extract ( Tzianabos, 2000 ; El Enshasy and Hatti-Kaul, 2013 ). Oral application of a polysaccharide fraction with a highly branched arabinogalactan protein derived from a medicinal plant, Terminalia chebula , displayed antitussive properties in TRIK strain guinea pigs ( Nosalova et al, 2013 ).…”

“…This region consisted of two non-anomeric (3.3-4.6 ppm) and anomeric (4.8-5.8 ppm) signals, which can not be distinguished well due to the overlapping of the peaks. The signal at around 5.2 ppm could be attributed to the anomeric protons linked to Araf and the peak at 5.05 ppm for the -Araf nonreducing terminal (Nosalova et al, 2013). Galactopyranose signal peaks were also observed at the chemical shifts around 4.2, 3.7 and 3.4 ppm, respectively (Izumi, 1977).…”
