Lithistid sponges have an important source of complex natural compounds with biological activities. The lithistid sponges are of interest to biomedical science because of the great variety of pharmaceutically relevant biological activities of their chemical extracts and are considered as economically important. The compounds identified in these sponges have therapeutic potential and have been frequently hypothesized to contain compounds of bacterial origin. The peptides identified from these lithistid sponges are found to be the sources of antifungal activity. The active agents of these sponges also have cytotoxic and immunosuppressive activities. Many of the cyclic peptides of lithistid represent the anti-HIV activity. The different structure and biological activities of the compounds derived from these sponges have more chemical aspects too.

Current cancer treatments require improvements in selectivity and efficacy. Surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy approaches result in patient's suffering over time due to the development of severe side-effects that simultaneously condition adherence to therapy. Biologically active peptides, in particular antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), are versatile molecules in terms of biological activities. The cytotoxic activities of several AMPs turn this group of molecules into an amazing pool of new templates for anticancer drug development. However, several unmet challenges limit application of peptides in cancer therapy. The mechanism(s) of action of the peptides need better description and understanding, and innovative targets have to be discovered and explored, facilitating drug design and development. In this chapter, we explore the natural occurring AMPs as potential new anticancer peptides (ACPs) for cancer prevention and treatment. Their modes of action, selectivity to tumor compared to normal cells, preferential targets, and applications, but also their weaknesses, are described and discussed.

Total 24 isolates with antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus and Shigella castellani, out of 259 strains, were isolated from the internal of seven marine fishes. The extracellular metabolites of strain S14, isolated from the internal of shark, showed stronger inhibition against the four tested bacteria, including G-and G+ bacteria. Based on the 16S rDNA the sequencing analysis, the strain S14 belonged to a member of Staphylococcus epidermidis with 99% DNA similarity and named to Staphylococcus epidermidis S14. The Staphylococcus epidermidis S14 secreted rarely antibacterial substance in the stabilization period and the antibacterial active substances might be the secondary metabolites. The antibacterial metabolites were not hydrolyzed by pepsin, trypsin and lysozyme. The antibacterial metabolites were stable for 30 min to high temperature treatment at 100°C and had higher antibacterial activity at neutral pH.
