Antitumor Effects of Chelerythrine: A Literature Review

Abstract: Chelerythrine (CHE), one of the main active components of the medicinal plant, Chelidonium majus, (Figure 1) Botanical authority is traditionally used as a natural medicine for its significant antitumor activity. The relevant literature on the antitumor activity of CHE has been reviewed to provide a theoretical basis for further study and utilization. This review aimed to provide new ideas for developing tumor-targeted drugs.

“…Although it is currently the focal point in antitumour research and its effect has been approved in prostate cancer, cervical cancer, gastric cancer cells, non-small cell lung carcinoma, renal cell carcinoma, etc. [ 37 ], little research has been performed on AML. The findings of our study provide new strategies for treating AML, and further studies are needed to confirm the pharmacological mechanism of chelerythrine in this disease.…”

“…Sanguinarine (2), for instance, exhibits potent antimicrobial activity against a range of pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and other relevant biological properties [9]. Chelerythrine (3) has shown capacity as an anticancer agent by inducing apoptosis in cancer cells [10] and even antifungal action [11]. The diverse bioactivities of these alkaloids highlight the potential for developing new drugs and therapeutic agents based on the discovery of bioactive benzophenanthridines [12].…”

“…6 Among the origin of homeopathic medicines are those of plant origin, which have established use for treating various diseases and their undeniable scientific evidence as herbal medicines. Based on this knowledge and the Homeopathic Medical Matter, Chelidonium majus (Papaveraceae family), originating in the European continent, is indicated in cases of liver diseases, usually accompanied by severe local pain and jaundice, among other clinical signs 7 . Furthermore, according to NAWAZ et al This study evaluated the effect of the D35 (1x10 -35 ) homeopathic dilution of Chelidonium majus in hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HepG2) after cell culturing and treatment with this medicine, using the MTT in vitro cell viability test.…”
