Antitumor Effect of Culinary-Medicinal Oyster Mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacq.: Fr.) P. Kumm., Derived Protein Fraction on Tumor-Bearing Mice Models

Abstract: Previously, we reported the in vitro anticancer and immunomodulatory effect of a protein fraction designated as Cibacron blue affinity purified protein (CBAEP) obtained from the culinary-medicinal oyster mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus. In the present study, we investigated the in vivo antitumor potential of CBAEP in different tumor-bearing mice models and studied the detailed mechanism of tumor regression in Dalton lymphoma (DL)-bearing mice. The lethal dose (LD50) of CBAEP was found to be 55 mg/kg body weight … Show more

“…They contain diverse biomolecules that are used for the treatment of various diseases including cancer [5]. Although a number of studies have already been conducted to explore the antibacterial and antifungal [6], anti-HIV [7], antitumoral [8], cytotoxic activity [9], antilipidemic [10], hyperglycemic and hypotensive [11], antiinflammatory [12], and immunomodulatory [13] properties of some species of oyster mushrooms, no reports have been published indicating the anticancer properties of the P. highking mushroom.…”

“…They belong to the oyster mushroom family (Pleurotaceae) and are known for being edible and nutritious mushrooms [13]. Fruiting bodies as well as active mycelia of Pleurotus species also possess a number of therapeutic properties such as antiinflammatory, immunostimulatory and immunomodulatory [14], anticancer [15], ribonuclease [16], antiviral [17], anti HIV [18], antitumor [19] and antibacterial activities [20]. The photo-irradiated extracellular synthesis of AgNPs using an aqueous extract of the edible oyster mushroom Pleurotus florida as a reducing agent has been reported earlier [10].…”

“…A direct induction of cancer cells apoptosis, as well as activation of immunological response of an organism were observed [Sarangi et al 2006]. A strong cytostatic effect of water and alcohol extracts towards human lung cancer cells (A549), cervical cancer (SiHa and HeLa), colorectal cancer (HT-29) [Lavi et al 2006], leukemia (HL-60) [Venkatakrishnana et al 2010], as well as a mouse sarcoma (S-180) was proven [Li et al 2008, Maiti et al 2011.
