Casearia sylvestris (Flacourtiaceae) is a plant popularly known as "guaçatonga" and it is used by indigenous population from South America (Brazil, Peru and Bolivia) in the treatment of several diseases, including cancer. Cytotoxic studies showed that it presents an interesting antitumoral potential due to the presence of casearins and the essential oil showed a high percentage of potent cytotoxic sesquiterpenes (β-caryophyllene and α-humulene). In this work, we verified that the essential oil of C. sylvestris presents a good selective cytotoxicity against HeLa, A-549 and HT-29 tumor cells (CD 50 63.3, 60.7 and 90.6 µg.ml ). The oil causes hemolysis in seven different kinds of erythrocytes, indicating that C. sylvestris must be used carefully. Besides, standard of β-caryophyllene and α-humulene were also tested and they showed similar cytotoxicity to the cytotoxicity presented in the oil, indicating that they might be responsible for the toxic effects that were observed in this study.KEYWORDS: Cytotoxicity, Casearia sylvestris, Erythrocytes, Essential oil, MTT, Sesquiterpenes. Avaliação citotóxica do óleo essencial de Casearia sylvestris Sw sobre células tumorais humanas e eritrócitos RESUMOA Casearia sylvestris (Flacourtiaceae) é uma planta popularmente conhecida como "guaçatonga" e é usada por povos indígenas da América do sul (Brasil, Peru e Bolivia) no tratamento de muitas doenças, incluindo câncer. Estudos citotóxicos mostraram que esta planta apresenta um possível e interessante potencial antitumoral devido à presença de moléculas chamadas casearinas. Além disso, a composição do óleo essencial mostrou uma alta concentração de sesquiterpenos de alto potencial citotóxico. Neste trabalho, nós verificamos que o óleo essencial da C. sylvestris apresentou uma boa citotoxicidade seletiva contra as linhagens de células tumorais HeLa, A-549 and HT-29 (CD 50 63,3, 60,7 e 90,6 µg.ml ). Além disso, o óleo causou hemólise em sete diferentes tipos de eritrócitos, indicando que a C. sylvestris precisa ser usada com cuidado. Também foram testados padrões de β-cariofileno e α-humuleno que mostraram citotoxicidade similar àquelas apresentadas pelo óleo, indicando que estes compostos podem ser os responsáveis pelos efeitos tóxicos que foram observados neste estudo.

Zanthoxylum rhoifolium Lam is a plant popularly used as antimicrobial, for malaria and inflammatory treatment. The essential oil of Z. rhoifolium was extracted and its cytotoxic effects against HeLa (human cervical carcinoma), A-549 (human lung carcinoma), HT-29 (human colon adenocarcinoma), Vero (monkey kidney) cell lines and mice macrophages were evaluated. Some of the terpenes of its essential oil (β-caryophyllene, α-humulene, α-pinene, myrcene and linalool) were also tested to verify their possible influence in the oil cytotoxic activity. The results obtained permitted to confirm that the essential oil is cytotoxic against tumoral cells (CD 50 = 82.3, 90.7 and 113.6 µg/ml for A-549, HeLa e HT-29 cell lines, respectively), while it did not show cytotoxicity against non-tumoral cells (Vero and mice macrophages). Thus, the essential oil from Z. rhoifolium leaves seems to present a possible therapeuthic role due to its selective cytotoxic activity against tumoral cell lines. The Psidium guajava L. specie is a perennial shrub, belonging to the Myrtaceae family and it is popularly known as guava, its leaves are used in therapy for treating various diseases. The study aims to evaluate the antibacterial activity in vitro of manipulated product obtained from dried extract of the leaves of P. guajava L. front standard bacteria ATCC and clinical isolates. The tests were conducted on bacterial samples: Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27883), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Salmonella spp, Acinetobacter baumannii, Proteus mirabilis, Shigella flexneri, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus mutans. Among the tests can be mentioned phytochemical of the P. guajava leaves ethanolic extract (EE), microbiological control and physical-chemical analysis of the product and microbiological tests such as agar diffusion method (wells), minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), an evaluation test of hemolytic capacity of the solution and in vitro assay cytotoxic activity were performed, . The best result of the product in the agar diffusion method was front Staphylococcus epidermidis, while the lower MIC and MBC were front Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923). The product showed no hemolytic activity and no cytotoxic activity at the tested concentrations. According to the test results, it is believed on the possibility of the production of a pharmaceutical formulation derived from the dry extract of Psidium guajava, since it showed great antibacterial activity.
