In the last decade the screening of microalgae, especially the cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), for antibiotics and pharmacologically active compounds has received ever increasing interest. A large number of antibiotic compounds, many with novel structures, have been isolated and characterised. Similarly many cyanobacteria have been shown to produce antiviral and antineoplastic compounds. A range of pharmacological activities have also been observed with extracts of microalgae, however the active principles are as yet unknown in most cases. Several of the bioactive compounds may find application in human or veterinary medicine or in agriculture. Others should find application as research tools or as structural models for the development of new drugs. The microalgae are particularly attractive as natural sources of bioactive molecules since these algae have the potential to produce these compounds in culture which enables the production of structurally complex molecules which are difficult or impossible to produce by chemical synthesis.

“…Al evaluar la letalidad de los extractos crudos de los octocorales y moluscos, frente a los nauplios de este crustáceo, se encontraron valores de concentración letal media (CL 50 ) que variaron entre 166.9 y 747.0μg/ml transcurridas las 24h de exposición y entre 46.8 y 286.6μg/ml luego de 48h (Cuadro 2). Estos valores de CL 50 , por debajo de 1.000μg/ml, indican la presencia de principios fisiológica-mente activos en los extractos, con posibles propiedades antitumorales y/o pesticidas, que le confieren un carácter letal o citotóxico sobre la A. salina, ya que la mortalidad de este organismo tiene una correlación positiva con los ensayos sobre células 9KB (carcinoma nasofaríngeo humano) (Schmitz et al 1993, Meyer et al 1982, Marcano & Hasegawa 2002. El incremento de actividad letal con el tiempo, puede deberse a una alteración del proceso de desarrollo de los nauplios de A. salina por efecto de los principios activos presentes en los diferentes extractos orgánicos (Carballo et al 2002), lo cual hace más vulnerable a este organismo cuando se encuentra en una etapa más avanzada de su desarrollo.…”

Secondary metabolites, lethality and antimicrobial activity of extracts from three corals and three marine mollusks from Sucre, Venezuela. The study of biochemical activity of extracts obtained from marine organisms is gaining interest as some have proved to have efficient health or industrial applications. To evaluate lethality and antimicrobial activities, some chemical tests were performed on crude extracts of the octocorals Eunicea sp., Muricea sp. and Pseudopterogorgia acerosa and the mollusks Pteria colymbus, Phyllonotus pomum and Chicoreus brevifrons, collected in Venezuelan waters. The presence of secondary metabolites like alkaloids, unsaturated sterols and pentacyclic triterpenes in all invertebrates, was evidenced. Additionally, sesquiterpenlactones, saponins, tannins, cyanogenic and cardiotonic glycosides were also detected in some octocoral extracts, suggesting that biosynthesis of these metabolites is typical in this group. From the lethality bioassays, all extracts resulted lethal to Artemia salina (LC 50 <1.000μg/ml) with an increased of lethal activity with exposition time. P. pomum extract showed the highest lethality rate (LC 50 =46.8μg/ml). Compared to the octocorals, mollusks extracts displayed more activity and a greater action spectrum against different bacterial strains, whereas octocorals also inhibited some fungi strains growth. Staphylococcus aureus was the most susceptible to the antimicrobial power of the extracts (66.7%), whereas Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger were not affected. The antibiosis shown by marine organisms extracts indicates that some of their biosynthesized metabolites are physiologically active, and may have possible cytotoxic potential or as a source of antibiotic components. The present review deals with the bioactive compounds of the marine non-chordates. The potent medicinal usage of the bioactive compounds viz. steroids, terpenoids, isoprenoid and non-isoprenoid compounds, quinones, brominated compounds, nitrogen heterocyclics and nitrogen-sulphur heterocyclics from marine non-chordates have been compiled. Various literatures survey revealed that the bioactive compounds isolated in recent past from the marine poriferans, cnidarians, annelids, arthropods, molluscs and echinoderms could be rich sources of therapeutic agents having antibacterial, antiinflamatory, anticarcinogenic properties. In overall, the present study will be benefitted to know global drug discovery researches on bioactive compounds from marine organisms for students, scholars, scientists, pharmaceutical sector, and government regulating authorities as new challenging technology in clinical applications through medicines.
