Antispasmodic Effect of Essential Oils and Their Constituents: A Review

Abstract: The antispasmodic effect of drugs is used for the symptomatic treatment of cramping and discomfort affecting smooth muscles from the gastrointestinal, billiary or genitourinary tract in a variety of clinical situations. The existing synthetic antispasmodic drugs may cause a series of unpleasant side effects, and therefore the discovery of new molecules of natural origin is an important goal for the pharmaceutical industry. This review describes a series of recent studies investigating the antispasmodic effect o… Show more

“…The exact cause for the incidence of colic is not known. However, the essential oils can easily cross the cell membranes and influence on ion channels to intracellular enzymes [22]. It can be stated that, in case of using essential oil, they can bond with special receptors of calcium channels and exert their antispasmodic effect, or it may be hypothesized that, the use of topical form of essential oils would require less time for herbal remedies to reach a constant level to influence on intestinal microflora.…”

“…Although Geraniol is composed of a combination of plants, its health benefits are of similar to those observed by Citronellol oil [5][6][7]. Accumulating evidence suggests that both of these oils have a calming effect and reduce anxiety, stress, and depression, yet their neuroprotective properties remain obscure [3,6]. Hence, the current study evaluates these EOs for neuroprotective qualities to the activity of the α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor, AMPARs.…”

“…Essential oils (EOs) are usually extracted from plants and are used for aromatherapy, which is an alternative medicine that demonstrates the healing effect to the aromatic compounds presented in the oil [1,2]. Although its therapeutic potential remains controversial, the usage of essential oil has been increasingly popular in the general population [3]. Many EOs are currently being presented to showcase a wide range of benefits; two important EOs are the Citronellol and Geraniol oils.…”

“…Some essential oils like peppermint oil are already used in clinical settings for the treatment of functional dyspepsia or irritable bowel syndrome. Numerous in vitro and in vivo experiments have proved significant antioxidant, antimicrobial, anxiolytic, spasmolytic or anti-inflammatory effects for several essential oils, which could be also translated in human medicine [4,5].…”
