Antispasmodic Effect of Blackcurrant (<b><i>Ribes nigrum</i></b> L.) Juice and Its Potential Use as Functional Food in Gastrointestinal Disorders

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relaxative effects of blackcurrant juice on the gastrointestinal smooth muscle in vitro. Materials and Methods: Berries of the blackcurrant cultivar Ometa were used for the preparation of the juice used. The spasmolytic activity of blackcurrant juice was tested on rat ileum isolated from male Wistar rats by monitoring its influence on spontaneous contractions, as well as contractions induced by potassium chloride (KCl), barium chloride (BaCl2 Show more

“…Blackcurrant ( Ribes nigrum L.) is a small, perennial shrub that is traditionally used in Europe as a medication for hypertension, diabetes, neuropathy, rheumatic, neoplastic, and neurodegenerative diseases. Also, it has antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antiviral properties (Bonarska‐Kujawa, Cyboran, Żyłka, Oszmiański, & Kleszczyńska, 2014; Gopalan et al, 2012; Miladinovic et al, 2018). Blackcurrant fruit juice downregulated IL‐1β mRNA in RAW264.7 macrophages induced by LPS in RT‐PCR assay.…”

“…Blackcurrants have long been regarded as having considerable health benefits, due to their high levels of vitamin C and substantial antioxidant activity (Lister et al 2002). Recent in vitro study investigated the antispasmodic effects of blackcurrant juice on the gastrointestinal smooth muscle, which may hold promise in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders (Miladinovic et al 2018).…”
