“…Perturbing effects of anti-Z-DNA antibodies on the salt-induced B-Z transition of poly(dG-dC).poly(dG-dC) have been observed (Malfoy and Leng, 1981;Jovin et al, 1983). Revet et al (1984) observed that if anti-Z-DNA antibodies were bound to supercoiled plasmids in very low ionic strength, and the plasmids were then cut with a restriction enzyme, some antibodies could be visualized on the linear plasmids in the electron microscope, suggesting that Z-DNA had been stabilized in the plasmid through its interaction with the anti-Z-DNA antibody.…”

“…The discovery that Z-DNA is a strong immunogen (17,18) has paved the way to look for the occurrence of such DNA structures in more complicated systems by taking advantage of the high specificity of immunochemical methods. For example, polytene chromosomes of Drosophila bind antibodies specific for Z-DNA (19), suggesting that such left-handed DNA conformations occur as structural elements in vivo.…”

“…The antibodies were elicited in rabbits immunized with poly(dGdC)poly(dG-dC) chemically modified with chlorodiethylenetriamineplatinum(II) chloride. The antibodies were found to bind to a number of synthetic polynucleotides in Z form and to form V DNA, but no crossreaction was detected with native or denatured DNA (calf thymus or Micrococcus luteus DNA), singlestranded or double-stranded RNA, deoxyguanosine, or deoxycytidine (14,29,30). The chromosome staining is abolished when the antibodies are first incubated with poly(dG-br5dC)poly(dGbr5dC) polymer, which has the Z conformation irrespective of the salt concentration (30).…”

“…Antisera against Z-DNA were. elicited in rabbits immunized with poly(dGdC)-poly (dG-dC) having 12% of the bases modified with chlorodiethylenetriamineplatinum(II) chloride (29,30). It has been shown that this modified polynucleotide exists in the Z form under physiological conditions (31).…”
