Antiserum Against Leukemia Cell Ferritin as a Diagnostic Tool for Malignant Neoplasms2

Abstract: The specific antiserum against a type of ferritin that is especially common to leukemia cells and the placenta was used to test, by countercurrent immunoelectrophoresis, sera from humans with various diseases. The best results were obtained with leukemia; patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia in blastic phase, acute myelogenous leukemia, lymphogenous leukemia, and unclassifiable juvenile leukemia frequently showed a positive reaction, but patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia in static phase did not.… Show more

“…Increased production of ferritin by tumour cells has been shown in acute leukaemia (White et al, 1974;Mori et al, 1975), but we found low concentrations of ferritin in hepatocellular carcinoma in comparison with normal liver. However, significant elevations of serum ferritin concentrations have been found in patients with liver tumour (Buffe et al, 1970;Alpert et al, 1973;Niitsu et al, 1975).…”

“…Therefore, its serum level has been noticed as the signal which shows the pathology of those diseases, and especially as a tumor marker. 1) It is also known that ferritin in the malignant tumor tissue shows more acidic property. 2) Lee & Richter 3) supposed that the acidic isoferritin differs from the normal ferritin in amino acid composition.…”
