Antiprotozoal and Antiglycation Activities of Sesquiterpene Coumarins from Ferula narthex Exudate

Abstract: Abstract:The exudate of Ferula narthex Boiss. (Apiaceae) is widely used in the Indian subcontinent as a spice and because of its health effects. Six sesquiterpene coumarins have been isolated from this exudate: feselol, ligupersin A, asacoumarin A, 8 -O-acetyl-asacoumarin A, 10 R-karatavacinol and 10 R-acetyl-karatavacinol. Based on its use in infectious and diabetic conditions, the isolated constituents were evaluated for antimicrobial and antiglycation activities. Some compounds showed activity against proto… Show more

“…Additionally, protein glycation was attenuated by cinnamic acid via reducing oxidation of thiol group oxidation and suppressing protein carbonyl formation (Adisakwattana et al, 2012). It has been evidenced that individual phenolic compounds could act synergistically in the crude extract of polygonum (Amin et al, 2016). Several edible plants including red grape skin, pomelo, and Cyperus rotundus have been proved to prevent reducing sugar-mediated protein glycation (Ardestani & Yazdanparast, 2007;Caengprasath, Ngamukote, Makynen, & Adisakwattana, 2013;Jariyapamornkoon, Yibchok-anun, & Adisakwattana, 2013).…”

“…Ethanolic extracts from Polygala sabulosa have activity against epimastigote and trypomastigote forms of T. cruzi and this is associated to the presence of 6‐methoxy‐7‐prenyloxycoumarin ( D ) . Ferula narthex exudate contains the trypanocidal coumarins fesolol ( E ), and 10′‐R‐karatavacinol ( F ) . Some synthetic coumarins like 3‐amino‐4‐hidroxi‐6‐metil‐2H‐cromen‐2‐ona ( G ) showed dual activity as trypanocidal and antioxidant agents .…”

“…[11] Ferula narthex exudate contains the trypanocidal coumarins fesolol (E), and 10′-R-karatavacinol (F). [12] Some synthetic coumarins like 3amino-4-hidroxi-6-metil-2H-cromen-2-ona (G) showed dual activity as trypanocidal and antioxidant agents. [13] Other coumarins were synthetized as hybrids of chalcones (H) or quinones (I) and interesting trypanocidal or antioxidant activity was observed.…”
