Antiprotozoal activity of extracts and isolated triterpenoids of ‘carnauba’ (Copernicia prunifera) wax from Brazil

Abstract: Context: 'Carnauba' wax is a natural product obtained from the processing of the powder exuded from Copernicia prunifera (Miller) H. E. Moore (Arecaceae). This material is widely used in the Brazilian folk medicine, including the treatment of rheumatism and syphilis. Objective: To investigate the antiprotozoal activity of hexane and EtOH extracts from the 'carnauba' wax as well as from the isolated compounds from the bioactive extracts. Material and methods: Two different samples of 'carnauba' (C. prunifera) w… Show more

“…More diterpenoids were identified in our study. Many triterpenoids have also been found to induce anti-inflammatory effects [ 4 , 46 49 ]. Triterpenoids have been known to be useable as new promising anticancer drugs [ 50 ].…”

“…Almeida et al [22] identified antiprotozoal metabolites from the Copernicia prunifera (Miller) showed in vitro action against promastigote and amastigote types of Leishmania infantum, trypomastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi. Among the separated dammarane-type triterpenoids, from the hexane and ethanolic extracts 'carnauba' wax (type 1 and 4) indicated antiprotozoal activity against promastigotes of Leishmania infantum, which showed the values of IC 50 of 46.2 mM in tested extract 1.…”

“…Most Trachycarpeae plants are characterized by the prevalence of lipoids (triterpenoids and steroids), polyphenols (flavonoids and phenolic acids), and saponins, as major bioactive secondary metabolites [ 12 , 13 , 14 ]. Moreover, several scientifically-based bioactivities are ascribed to members of this tribe including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiprotozoal, antidiabetic, anti-hyperlipidemic, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-benign prostate hyperplasia, and anti-prostatic cancer [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ].…”
