Antiproton beam polarizer using a dense polarized target

Abstract: We describe considerations regarding the spin filtering method for an antiproton beam. The proposed investigation of the double polarization cross section for antiproton to nucleon interaction is outlined. It will use a single path of an antiproton beam through a dense polarized target, e.g. 3 He or CH2, followed by a polarimeter.

“…The total polarized pd cross sections σ i (i = 1, 2, 3), and specifically, the polarization degree of the antiproton beam is of interest in the context of plans to establish a polarized antiproton beam via the spin-filtering method as proposed by the PAX collaboration (see also [45]). Corresponding predictions presented in this work, exhibit a sizable model dependence, reflecting the uncertainties in the spin dependence of the elementary pp and pn interactions.…”
