Antiproliferative Effects of Saponins from the Roots of Platycodon grandiflorum on Cultured Human Tumor Cells

Abstract: Three new triterpenoid saponins, platyconic acid B lactone (1), deapio-platyconic acid B lactone (2), and deapio-platycodin D(2) (3), together with 17 known triterpenoid saponins, were isolated from a root extract of Platycodon grandiflorum. The structures of 1-3 were determined on the basis of spectroscopic data interpretation and chemical transformation. Saponins with a platycodigenin or polygalacic acid unit as a sapogenin demonstrated significant inhibitory effects on the proliferation of a small panel of … Show more

“…Several saponins have exhibited potent cytotoxic [33], antiproliferative [34], antifungal [35], anti-inflammatory [36], and antiviral activity [37], which indicates a significant potential for drug development. One particulary promising property of spirostan saponins is their anticancer activity.…”

“…Platycodin D (PD) is a triterpenoid saponin isolated from the Chinese medicinal herb Platycodonis Radix. It possesses important biological activities, including immune stimulation (Xie et al, 2008), anti-inflammation (Kim et al, 2001Ahn et al, 2005), anti-nociception (Choi et al, 2002), anti-obesity Lee et al, 2010), anti-atherosclerosis (Wu et al, 2012) and anti-cancer (Kim et al, 2005Kim et al, 2008a;Kim et al, 2008b;Shin et al, 2009;Choi et al, 2010;Yu and Kim, 2010;Chun et al, 2012) etc. Due to the various pharmacological activities, PD has been listed as the marker for the quality control of Platycodonis Radix in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China (Pharmacopoeia Commission of the Ministry of Health of the P.R.…”

“…As the main bioactive principles of P. grandiflorum, about 40 oleananetype saponins, composed of four types of aglycones, i.e., platycodigenin, platycogenic acid A, platyconic acid A lactone, and polygalacic acid, have been reported so far [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9], and are regarded as being responsible for the various biological activities such as antitumor [10][11][12][13][14][15][16], immunomodulatory [17][18][19], hepatoprotective [20][21][22][23][24], neuroprotective [25][26][27], anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-adiposity [28,29], analgesic, antioxidant [30], anti-hyperglycemic [31] and osteogenic [32] effects.…”
