Antiproliferative and Antimicrobial Activities of Selected Bryophytes

Abstract: One-hundred and sixty-eight aqueous and organic extracts of 42 selected bryophyte species were screened in vitro for antiproliferative activity on a panel of human gynecological cancer cell lines containing HeLa (cervix epithelial adenocarcinoma), A2780 (ovarian carcinoma), and T47D (invasive ductal breast carcinoma) cells using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and for antibacterial activity on 11 strains using the disc-diffusion method. A total of 99 extracts derive… Show more

“…Among these, 41 species of bryophytes performed 25 % inhibition of the proliferation of at least one of the cell lines at a concentration of 10 g mL −1 . Considering the range of concentrations tested by the present study, it is not possible to compare it with the studies cited previously, such as the one by Vollár et al ., [48] which used much higher concentrations of extracts, oils, and isolates of bryophytes than those tested here.…”

“…Only a handful of studies have been carried out to investigate the bioactive potential of lower plants including bryophytes [13,21,22]. Since Sri Lanka is an isolated island with remarkable biodiversity among its flora, the density and the number of bryophyte species are very high.…”

“…The next stage of the research was devoted to an analysis of the changes in the cell metabolic activity during the biodegradation of selected aromatic compounds. The MTT assay, used mainly for measurements of metabolic activity of eukaryotic cells, was also applied in bacteria research [30,31]. The assay in question is based on the reduction of a yellow, water-soluble MTT reagent (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-trazolium bromide) into its purple formazan salt, but only by metabolically active cells.…”
