Antiproliferation for Breast Cancer Cells by Ethyl Acetate Extract of Nepenthes thorellii x (ventricosa x maxima)

Abstract: Extracts from the Nepenthes plant have anti-microorganism and anti-inflammation effects. However, the anticancer effect of the Nepenthes plant is rarely reported, especially for breast cancer cells. Here, we evaluate the antitumor effects of the ethyl acetate extract of Nepenthes thorellii x (ventricosa x maxima) (EANT) against breast cancer cells. Cell viability and flow cytometric analyses were used to analyze apoptosis, oxidative stress, and DNA damage. EANT exhibits a higher antiproliferation ability to tw… Show more

“…Our results showed that the GSH activity was decreased and SOD activity was increased with the increasing concentrations of AG-ME. These results are accordance to the previously published reports suggesting that the exposure of plant extracts could decrease the GSH [ 58 ] and increase the SOD activities [ 59 ] in MCF-7 (human breast carcinoma). The lowering of GSH activity and an increase in SOD activity indicated that oxidative stress is involved in MCF-7 cell death-induced by AG-ME.…”

“…To provide a comparison with the clinically used anticancer drug cisplatin, the IC 50 value for cisplatin at 24 h in the MTS assay for SKBR3 cells was 49.8 μM [ 34 ]. The IC 50 concentrations for 48 h cisplatin in the ATP assay were 4.9, 17.9, and 26.9 μM for SKBR3, MCF7, and MDA-MB-231 cells, respectively [ 35 ].…”

“…For comparison with other clinical drugs, the IC 50 value of cisplatin in oral cancer OECM-1 and Ca9-22 cells are 2.61 and 1.20 μg/mL in a 48 h MTS assay ( Figure 2 B). At 48 h MTS assay, the IC 50 value of cisplatin in breast cancer SKBR3 and MCF7 cells are 3.71 and 10.45 μg/mL, respectively [ 33 ]. Accordingly, the crude extract MEUB shows a similar sensitivity to cisplatin in oral cancer cells and a higher sensitivity than in breast cancer cells.…”
