Antiproliferation and apoptosis induction of paeonol in human esophageal cancer cell lines

Abstract: The incidence of esophageal cancer (EC), especially adenocarcinoma, has increased tremendously in Western countries and the prognosis of EC remains poor. Paeonol (Pae), a phenolic component from the root bark of Paeonia moutan, possesses antitumor effects in vitro and in vivo. The present study showed that Pae had an antiproliferative effect on the two human EC cell lines (SEG-1 and Eca-109), with different sensitivities to Pae. Acridine orange staining and flow cytometry assays showed that Pae induced apoptos… Show more

“…Previous studies from our laboratory have suggested the effects of paeonol in the prevention of human cancers in vitro and in vivo by inducing apoptosis. Thus, the inhibition of COX-2 enzymatic activity in controlling neoplastic cell proliferation is the possible mechanism [26][27][28]. Therefore, these studies suggest the potential use of COX-2 inhibitors combined with other chemotherapy drugs or irradiation in the treatment of PFTC.…”

“…It has been used as antifebrile and analgesic for thousand years in Chinese [1,2]. The researches of modern medicine verified that paeonol possesses other pharmacological activities, such as antiinflammation, anti-oxidation, sedative, acaricide, antiproliferation and apoptosis in cancer cell, immunoregulation and antimicrobial [3][4][5][6]. Although alarge number of studies about paeonol have been done in the lastdecades of years, the reports about its derivatives have only afew [1,2,7,8].…”

“…Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy improves resectability, reduces the extent of disease progression, and improves local control, disease-free survival and overall survival rates when compared with surgery alone (6)(7)(8)(9). Despite improvements in surgical techniques, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, the prognosis for ESCC remains poor, with a 5-year survival rate of <10% (10). This is frequently due to extra-esophageal invasion and/or local lymph node metastasis, which may present in the early stages of ESCC (11).…”
