Antiphotoaging Effects of 3,5-Dicaffeoyl-epi-quinic Acid via Inhibition of Matrix Metalloproteinases in UVB-Irradiated Human Keratinocytes

Abstract: UVB exposure is one of the causes of several skin complications including but not limited to premature aging, wrinkle formation, and hyperpigmentation. UV-induced skin aging is called photoaging, and oxidative stress-induced overexpression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) is the main reason behind the photoaging-mediated collagen degradation. Natural origin inhibitors of MMPs are regarded as a promising approach to prevent or treat photoaging. Therefore, the present study investigated the protective effects… Show more

“…Furthermore, it is interesting to note that STC1 might not be a terminal regulator of involution, because MMP1 exhibits a strong signal of immunohistochemical localization in the mammary gland during late involution [ 6 ] and is regulated by STC1 [ 22 ]. Studies have shown the mediating role of MAPK activation in MMP1 upregulation [ 10 , 11 , 12 ], and we speculated that the indirect regulation of MMP1 by chi-miR-8516 might be achieved by the modulation of MAPK activation.…”

“…It is reported that milk produced by STC1 -overexpressing mother mice causes growth retardation in young mice [ 9 ]. Studies have shown the mediating role of MAPK activation in MMP1 upregulation [ 10 , 11 , 12 ], and we speculated that the indirect regulation of MMP1 by chi-miR-8516 might be achieved by the modulation of MAPK activation. Circular RNAs are a class of endogenous noncoding RNAs generated by non-classical alternative splicing that act as miRNA sponges and inhibit the process of miRNA-targeting genes [ 13 , 14 , 15 ].…”

“…Studies have examined the protective roles of single compounds on epidermal cells, including 3,5-dicaffeoyl-epiquinic acid obtained from Atriplex gmelinii [167], quercetin 3,7-dimethyl ether 40-glucoside from Nymphoides indica [163], youngiasides A and C from Youngia denticulatum [146], ixerisoside A from Ixeris dentata [168], α-, β-, γ-mangostins and gartanin from Garcinia mangostana [169]. Of these, 3,5-dicaffeoyl-epiquinic acid downregulates the expression of MMP-1, -2 and -9, whereas α-, β-, γ-mangostins and gartanin downregulate the expression of MMP-1 and -9.…”

“…Commercial aqueous extract of the leaves of P. aureum (marketed as Fernblock®, Fernplus®, Fernmed®, and Fernage®) contain a standardized 0.6-1.3% total phenolic compounds concentration and 0.4-0.9% quinic acid concentration 4 . Mechanisms of action of these commercial products involve free radical scavenging and regulation of several genes, such as metalloproteinases 5 , tyrosinase inhibition 6 , and others. Also, natural phenolic compounds are known for absorbing UV radiation, similar to synthetic compounds, such as homosalate or dibenzalacetone do so.…”
