Antioxidative Properties of Recently Synthesised D–Π–D type Schiff-Base Ligands

Abstract: Two recently synthesised D-π-D type Schiff base ligands have been screened for their antioxidant capacity using several tests; reducing power, chelating ability on metal ions, scavenging capacity against the radicals 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, superoxide, hydroxyl, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and N,Ndimethyl-p-phenylenediamine dihydrochloride. The results were compared with synthetic antioxidants e.g. butylated hydroxytoluene, butylated hydroxyanisole, α-tocopherol, trolox or asc… Show more

“…Schiff bases are characterized by the N = CH (imine) group which is important in elucidating the mechanism of transamination and racemisation in biological systems [5,6]. It was recently reported that L had a significant hydroxyl and free radical scavenging activity, metal chelating effect and reducing power against various antioxidant systems in vitro [7] and so it is very important to determine the surface energy and the quantity of acid-base character of L (Fig. 1).…”

“…The published opinions on the structure and antioxidant activity relationships are, however, quite inconsistent. It can be assumed from several scientific works that the quality of antioxidant action depends on the type of ligands forming the bioactive complexes [1,2].…”

“…The relation of SBL with used polar and nonpolar solvents was tested at temperatures between 30 ∘ C and 60 ∘ C under melting point of SBL. The goals of this paper were (1) to synthesize ad characterize new D--D type Schiff base ligand, (2) to figure out the surface free energy of SBL, (2) to calculate adsorption thermodynamic parameters of SBL, (3) to determine the acid-base quantity of SBL.…”
