Antioxidative effects of melatonin administration in elderly primary essential hypertension patients

Abstract: The imbalance of the redox state of the aging organism may be involved in the development of primary essential hypertension. Melatonin, a potent antioxidant agent, was found to exert a hypotensive effect and improve the function of the cardiovascular system. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of melatonin supplementation on oxidative stress parameters in elderly primary essential hypertensive (EH) patients, controlled by a diuretic (indapamide) monotherapy. The levels of malondialdehyde (MDA)… Show more

“…Melatonin consumption (5 mg/ day for 30 days) in type 2 diabetic patients resulted in a significant rise in SOD-1 activity and a reduction in the MDA level [31]. Moreover, 5 mg/day melatonin supplementation for 30 days in primary essential hypertension patients significantly increased SOD-1 and catalase activity and reduced products of lipid peroxidation [34]. A very large body of evidences indicates that melatonin is a major scavenger of both oxygen-and nitrogenbased reactive molecules [15,35].…”

“…Beneficial antioxidant effects of melatonin have been recently shown in clinical settings for several chronic diseases, including patients with rheumatoid arthritis 52 , elderly patients with primary essential hypertension 53 , and females with infertility 54 . Melatonin has been administered in both physiological and pharmacological amounts to humans and animals, and there is widespread agreement that it is a non-toxic molecule 55 .…”

“…In these in vivo studies, melatonin was more effective than vitamin E (66-68), β-carotene (69), and vitamin C (69-71), and superior to garlic oil (72). Beneficial antioxidant effects of melatonin have been recently shown in clinical settings for several chronic diseases, including patients with rheumatoid arthritis (73), elderly patients with primary essential hypertension (74), and females with infertility (75). Several antioxidants reportedly preserve the activities of SOD and/or GSH-Px.…”
