Antioxidative Activity of Carbazoles fromMurraya koenigiiLeaves

Abstract: The antioxidative properties of the leaves extracts of Murraya koenigii using different solvents were evaluated based on the oil stability index (OSI) together with their radical scavenging ability against 1-1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The methylene chloride (CH(2)Cl(2)) extract and the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) soluble fraction of the 70% acetone extract significantly prolonged the OSI values comparable to those of alpha-tocopherol and BHT. Five carbazole alkaloids were isolated from the CH(2)Cl(2) extrac… Show more

“…Antioxidant carbazoles have been reported present in MKL may be favorably contributing to the memory enhancing effect seen in the present study. Thus, the protective effect of MKL may be attributed to its antioxidant property by virtue of which susceptible brain cells get exposed to less oxidative stress resulting in reduced brain damage and improved neuronal function (Chakrabarty et al, 1997;Ramsewak et al, 1999;Tachibana et al, 2001;Wang et al, 2003).…”

“…Leaf extract of Murraya koenigii have also been reported to posses antifungal, antineoplastic, nitric oxide scavenging and antioxidant activities (Das et al, 1965;Khan et al, 1996a;Chakrabarty et al, 1997;Khan et al, 1997;Ramsewak, et al, 1999;Tachibana et al, 2001;Baliga et al, 2003). Anti-oxidant, Antitumor, Anti-microbial and Anti-diabetic actives have been reported for some carbazole alkaloids, which were identified as the major compounds in Murraya koenigii leaves (Tachibana et al, 2001;Adebajo et al, 2004Adebajo et al, , 2006Ito et al, 2006).…”

“…Phytochemical studies on leaves, stem, bark and root of this plant have resulted in the isolation of carbazole alkaloids including murrayanine, girinimbine, mahanimbine, murrayafoline-A and one triterpene (Chakraborty et al 1978;Ito et al 1993;Baker et al 2007). Five more carbazole alkaloids viz, euchrestine B, bismurrayafoline E, mahanine, mahanimbicine and mahanimbine were reported from curry leaves and their radical RSA were ascertained (Tachibana et al 2001). This species is known to possess anti-inflammatory, antidysenteric, antioxidant, antidiabetic and has diverse pharmacological properties (Arulselvan and Subramanian 2007).…”

“…which exhibit good anti-oxidant activity. 8 Based on their order of potency in exhibiting anti-oxidant activity, well known carbazoles of M. koenigii have demonstrated activity based on their structural aspects in following order: mahanine > bismahanine > isomahanine > euchrestine B > bispyrayafoline > bismurrayafoline > koenimbine > O-methylmahanine > O-methylmurrayamine A > mahaninebicine > mahaninebine. 9 Numerous hybridized carbazole moieties have been reported that possess high anti-oxidant activity as compared to some substituted carbazoles.…”
