Antioxidants from three Swietenia Species (Meliaceae)

Abstract: The genus Swietenia (Meliaceae) has a wide variety of secondary metabolites with reported antioxidant activity, such as flavonoids and limonoids. In the present study, the antioxidant capacity, along with the phenol and flavonoid contents of the leaf extracts of three species of this genus: Swietenia mahagoni, Swietenia macrophylla, and Swietenia humilis were evaluated. The antioxidant activity was determined by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) … Show more

“…obtained through ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) produced a higher antioxidant capacity (IC50 = 25.29 mg/mL). 33 Findings from the study of Lina et al (2016) 34 has reported that the species S. macrophylla, S. mahagoni, and S. humilis have significant antioxidant activity and contain quite large amounts of phenolic and flavonoid compounds. Of the three species, S. macrophylla was the most effective in terms of the total antioxidant ability.…”

“…Of the three species, S. macrophylla was the most effective in terms of the total antioxidant ability. 34 Apart from Swietenine, tetranortriperpenoid was also identified as a hypoglycemic ingredient whose effect is comparable to human insulin. Swietenine at 50 mg/kg p.o.…”
