Antioxidants as a preventive therapeutic option for age related neurodegenerative diseases

Abstract: Neurodegenerative diseases: an overview -Neurodegenerative disease term illustrate a range of conditions in which primarily neurons get affected or die. Neurons are the building blocks of the central and peripheral nervous system. Neurons could not reproduce or replace themselves with age therefore, when they get damaged or die they cannot be replaced and lead to specific neurodegenerative disease. Few evidences for the presence of stem cells are reported [1] but still it is not understood whether damaged neur… Show more

“…Oxidative stress leads to a progressive decline in cell physiology [30] by damaging cellular macromolecular components such as DNA, lipids and proteins [31,32]. As oxidative stress strongly contributes to abnormal protein misfolding and the propagation of oligomers, antioxidant therapies are emerging as a preventive therapeutic option for age-related NDs [33,34].…”

“…Red Blood Cells (RBCs) are emerging as a good model to investigate the biochemical alterations related to aging and neurodegeneration, including oxidative stress and inflammation [15, 16]. Indeed, RBCs are highly susceptible to oxidative damage, due to the high concentration of oxygen and haemoglobin [17, 18].…”

“…The major antioxidant enzymes that are directly involved in the neutralization of ROS are SOD, CAT, GPx, glutathione reductase, and peroxiredoxins (Carocho and Ferreira, 2013). The SOD is the first line of defense against free radicals and catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide anion radical (O 2 •ˉ) into H 2 O 2 by reduction leading to the accumulation of H 2 O 2 (Singh, 2015). This H 2 O 2 is later converted into water and oxygen by CAT or GPx.…”
