Antioxidant responses to chronic hypoxia in the rat cerebellum and pons

Abstract: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) and sleep fragmentation and deprivation. Exposure to CIH results in oxidative stress in the cortex, hippocampus and basal forebrain of rats and mice. We show that sustained and intermittent hypoxia induces antioxidant responses, an indicator of oxidative stress, in the rat cerebellum and pons. Increased glutathione reductase (GR) activity and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels were observed in the pons and c… Show more

“…To determine whether ROS do play a role in chromaffin cell responses to IH, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in adrenal medullae were monitored as an index of ROS generation Ramanathan et al 2005). The MDA levels were elevated by 60% in adrenal medullae from IH compared with control pups (P Ͻ 0.001; Fig.…”

“…11,12,40 We and others have also shown that IH induces oxidative stress, which induces apoptotic cell losses within the central nervous system in adult and newborn animals, including CV control nuclei. 3,5,6,[41][42][43] Interestingly, when adult rats are exposed to an IH protocol, LV dysfunction occurs and appears to be mediated, at least in part, by increased oxidative stress. 2 Perinatal IH exposures are also associated with plasticity and metaplasticity of neural responses, more specifically as they are related to chemoreceptor, sympathetic, and somatic nerves, all of which may reflect the principal mechanisms underlying the long-term changes in CV control.…”

“…MDA levels were monitored as an index of lipid peroxidation Ramanathan et al 2005) in untreated (control), H 2 O 2 -treated (2.2 mM for 600 s), and Fe 2ϩ (100 M)-H 2 O 2 (2.2 mM)-treated preBötC and cortico-hippocampal slices. Basal MDA levels were comparable between cortico-hippocampal brain slices and medullary brain slices ( Fig.…”
