Antioxidant properties of species from the Brazilian cerrado by different assays

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The purpose of this study was to screen the antioxidant activity of medicinal plant extracts from the Brazilian cerrado, through other methods than the total phenolic content and its correlation with the antioxidant activity. Ethanolic extracts of ten species were evaluated through three antioxidant assays, in vitro, including 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), total antioxidant activity and reducing power; and by using the Folin-Ciocalteu method the total phenolic content was determined. Ethanolic… Show more

“…The extracts worked which showed greater inhibition of free radical DPPH • was ethanol, which corroborates Farias 37 in the ethanol extract showed strong antioxidant activity in vitro, since the amount of the antioxidant activity (IC 50 ) was obtained 0.56 µL/mL. While the hydroalcoholic extract was 1.34µL/mL and that AA showed lower was the aqueous extract with IC 50 of 2.69µL/mL (Fig.…”

“…Chlorogenic acid and C-glycosyl flavonoids may explain AA, showing results are in agreement with the medicinal use of this specie. 37 It is worth noting that the isovitexin flavonoids have an antioxidant potential effectively active. 38 This same compound isolated in the alcoholic extract of Cecropia glaziovii contributed to activity of the extracts of this kind on blood pressure, while isoorientin and orientin are the main C-glycosyl flavonoids for C. pachystachya.…”

“…The results were presented as the EC 50 of the radical scavenging capacity, corresponding to the concentration of sample required to decrease the initial DPPH absorbance by 50%. The data are representative of three independent experiments, performed in triplicate (Farias et al, 2013).…”

“…19 ± 0.05 μg ml -1 for the flowers, and 1.47 μg ml -1 for the gallic acid standard. In addition, Aristolochia bracteata has been reported to be an accessible source of natural antioxidants and exhibited IC 50 values similar to the ones observed for M. pubescens (Farias et al, 2013).…”
