Antioxidant properties of resveratrol and piceid on lipid peroxidation in micelles and monolamellar liposomes

Abstract: The antioxidant activities of trans-resveratrol (trans-3,5,4′-trihydroxystilbene) and trans-piceid (trans-5,4′-dihydroxystilbene-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside), its more widespread glycosilate derivative, have been compared measuring their inhibitory action on peroxidation of linoleic acid (LA) and the radical scavenging ability towards different free radicals (such as DPPH) and radical initiators. It has been found that the two stilbenes have similar antioxidant capacity, while the comparison with BHT (2,6-di-tert-… Show more

“…PD is more resistant to enzymatic oxidation than resveratrol owing to the change of molecule structure (Fabris et al, 2008). In fact, the antioxidative activity of trans-polydatin is stronger than cis-PD and trans-resveratrol (Mikulski & Molski, 2010).…”

“…PD enables the extension of mean lifespan of transgenic strain CL2166 due to its protective effects against oxidative stress (Wen et al, 2012), shows a slower but prolonged protective action against lipid peroxidation in comparison with BHT (2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol) and a-tocopherol (vitamin E) and is more efficacious than resveratrol. The susceptible hydroxyl group of PD is located in the lipid region of the bilayer close to the double bonds of polyunsaturated fatty acids, making it particularly suitable for the prevention and control of the lipid peroxidation of the membranes (Fabris et al, 2008).…”

“…As previously reported [17], the propolis antioxidant capacity was calculated as the antioxidant concentration (mg/L) that halves the rate of oxygen consumption due to the peroxidation process and it is expressed as inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ).…”

“…The purity of both compounds tested by HPLC-MS, UV and MNR was higher than 99 % (method patented and described in EP2087894A1) [15,16]. Resveratrol and polydatin were dissolved in ethanol at 100 mM stock solution.…”
