Antioxidant enzymes in the honey bee, Apis mellifera

Abstract: -Catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were determined in postmitochondrial fractions of tissue homogenates (spermathecae, muscle and ventriculi), in hemolymph plasma, and in semen of honey bees. The highest CAT activity was found in semen (4.8 mU/µg fresh weight), and the enzyme was confined to the spermatozoa. CAT and GST activities of ventriculi exceeded those of other tissues and hemolymph, CAT being highest in mated queen ventriculi (2.7 mU/µg) and GST h… Show more

“…The values of TAC measurements in whole-body homogenate or segments are limited because the specific origin of antioxidant protection cannot be defined. We demonstrated TAC in haemolymph for the first time, extending our knowledge of total antioxidative protection in honeybee haemolymph (Weirich et al 2002).…”

“…To date, activity of SOD, CAT and GST has been found in honeybee haemolymph (Weirich et al 2002). Activity of antioxidant enzymes is low and the honeybee genome is characterised by low number of genes coding for antioxidative protein (Corona and Robinson 2006), which contributes to limited defence against ROS in comparison to other insects.…”

“…In addition, they live in large colonies, are easily manipulated, and their genome has been sequenced (Remolina et al 2007;Neukirch 1982;Rueppell et al 2007a, b). A variety of honeybee specimens, including spermathecae, muscle, ventriculi, hemolymph plasma, semen, brain, trophocytes, and fat cells, have been used to study oxidative stress and aging (Weirich et al 2002;Seehuus et al 2006a, b;Williams et al 2008;Collins et al 2004;Corona et al 2005;Hsieh and Hsu 2011a, b).…”

“…Therefore, honeybees have been the model system for many aging studies (Remolina et al 2007;Neukirch 1982;Rueppell et al 2007a, b).
