Antioxidant effects of heated garlic juice on cadmium-induced liver damage in rats as compared to ascorbic acid

Abstract: -The antioxidant efficacy of heated garlic juice (HGJ) in liver was evaluated with that of ascorbic acid (AA) in rats exposed to acute dose of cadmium (4 mg kg -1 bd. wt). The rats were either given HGJ (100 mg kg -1 bd. wt) orally, daily for 4 weeks or AA (100 mg kg -1 bd. wt) orally, daily for 4 weeks or both or cadmium (4 mg kg -1 bd. wt) intraperitoneally for 3 days. Another group of rats was given cadmium (4 mg kg -1 bd. wt) intraperitoneally for 3 days after pretreatment with either HGJ (100 mg kg -1 bd.… Show more

“…The homogenate was centrifuged at 4000 × g for 15 min at 25 °C and the supernatant was used for the determination [35]. The 500 μL of homogenates were used for detection of the ROS generation by the ROS sensitive dye, 2,7-dichlorodihydro-fluorescein diacetate (DCF-DA; Invitrogen, Co., USA), as an indicator [36,37].…”

“…The effects of some antioxidants/plants on toxic substances-induced liver damage are summarized in Table 5 . It is particularly worth noting that Nrf2 could be activated by several antioxidants/plants in dimethylnitrosamine or cadmium induced hepatic injury models [ 151 , 152 , 153 ]. Antioxidant could induce both modification of inhibitor of Nrf2 (INrf2) cysteine 151 and PKC-mediated phosphorylation of Nrf2 serine 40 to release Nrf2 from INrf2.…”

“…Liver protection by pre-treatment with antioxidants (heated garlic juice and ascorbic acid; each 100 mg/kg body weight for 4 weeks) was also demonstrated in adult male Wistar rats. Whereas the rats received 4 mg/kg body weight CdCl 2 for three days at the last week of antioxidant treatment, lipid peroxidation could be significantly decreased [44]. Administration of 10 mg Cd/L (as Cd acetate) to Wistar rats during gestation and lactation also increased lipid peroxidation and CAT activity in pup liver, and is highly hepatotoxic to pups from the first day of birth on [45].…”
