“…An increase in tocopherol content around the second day under both stresses not correlated with the chlorophyll degradation may indicate that in the leaves of tomato plants this compound was synthesized de novo at an early phase of salinity stress, and tocopherol probably acted as a typical antioxidant reducing susceptibility of thylakoid membranes to peroxidation. The observations of Brem et al (2004) indicating that during in vitro study tocopherol achieved a plateau in its antioxidant activity after 90 min seem to prove the above suggestion. All the above data allow to suppose that the constitutive level of tocopherol in tomato plants was utilized between the first and third h after NaCl treatment and later its regeneration was not sufficient, therefore its biosynthesis started.…”

“…The mixtures were then mixed with a vortex mixer and incubated in the dark at room temperature for 30 min. The absorbance was measured spectrophotometrically at 520 nm with a microplate reader (DTX 880 multimode detector) (Brem et al, 2004). The percentage of inhibition was calculated by the equation:…”
