In our survey on the chemical composition of Chinese folk medicines, nine compounds were isolated from methanol extract of the leaves of Toricellia angulata Oliv. var. intermedia (Harms.) Hu (Corniaceae). The structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of NMR data analysis, which were identified as dimethyl 2-(hydroxymethyl)-5-oxocyclohexane-1,4-dicarboxylate (1), methyl succinate (2), 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfuraldehyde (3), 7-hydroxy-6-methoxycoumarin (4), loliolide (5), (8 S)-deca-2-trans-2,9-diene-4,6-diyn-1,8-diol (6), methyl malate (7), griselinoside (8), and methyl linoleate (9), respectively. Among them, compound 1 is a new cyclohexanone derivative and given a trivial name torriangulate A, while others are categorized to be organic acids (2, 7, and 9), a coumarin derivative (4), a terpene lactone (5), a polyacetylene (6), and an iridoid glycoside (8). Compounds 3–5 were isolated from this genus for the first time and compound 9 was first identified from this species. The discovered compounds with novel or known structures further reveal the chemical basis of T. angulata var . intermedia, which lays a foundation for the development of T. angulata var . intermedia used as a traditionally folk medicine.

Herein, a series of twelve bis-hydrazone substituted isovanilline derivatives 3(a-l), were freshly re-synthesized by the reaction of bis-aldehydes with substituted hydrazide derivatives since these compounds previously showed potent aldose reductase inhibition properties. The obtained compounds were tested for their potential antibacterial and antioxidant activities. In the present study, four different bacterial strains were used, including Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212) and Gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 10231, Escherichia coli ATCC 25912). On the other hand, the antioxidant capacities of freshly re-synthesized bis-hydrazone substituted isovanilline derivatives were determined by using several antioxidant methods, including DPPH free radical scanvenging, TEAC cupric reducing (CUPRAC) and metal chelating activity methods. Several lead molecules were discovered as a potential bacterial inhibitors against S. aureus and E. coli bacterial strains. More specifically, compounds 3g (R=-H) and 3j (R= -4Cl) showed great inhibition properties against E. coli bacterial strains by having MIC values of 1.56 and 6.25 µg/mL, respectively. Moreover, none of the compounds showed potent antioxidant activity against tested methods with respect to compared standards.

Three new isoflavone glucosides, kudonol A−C (1–3), two new ester derivatives of phenylpropanoid, kudolignan A and B (4–5) and five known compounds, (−)-maackiain (6), neoliquiritin (7), methyl 4-coumarate (8), methyl ferulate (9) and (+)-wikstromol (10), were isolated from an extract of dried seeds of the traditional Chinese medicinal plant Sophora alopecuroides L. Their structures were established by NMR and HRESIMS data analyses. The monosaccharide part’s configuration of isoflavone glucosides was confirmed by acid hydrolysis and analyzed by a JAsco OR-4090 chiral detector, comparing it to standard substance D-glucose. The cytotoxicity effects against HeLa, Hep3B, MCF-7 and H1299 cells were tested by CCK-8 assay.
