Antioxidant compounds in the seaweedGelidiella acerosaprotects human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells against TCDD induced toxicity

Abstract: 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is a persistent environmental toxin formed as an unintentional by-product of incomplete combustion. Several therapeutic approaches have evolved to combat its toxicity since it elicits immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, carcinogenicity and lethality. Search for drugs from natural resources especially from seaweeds has become intense due to their enormous pharmacological potential. Hence, the present study aims at revealing the protective effect of methanoli… Show more

“…The outcomes of the current study are in line with earlier studies where G.acerosawas shown to regulate SOD activity in Alzheimer's disease [28] and to protect human peripheral mononuclear cells from TDCCinduced toxicity [29]. As excess ROS are associated with cellular damage, in ammation and cancer progression, the enhanced activity of antioxidant enzymes may confer protection against free radical damage to cells [30].…”

“…Compared with the TCDD-treated group, the gene expression levels of ALP and osterix were enhanced by 1 μM catalpol.4 | DISCUSSIONExposure to TCDD, a persistent organic pollutant, causes the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induces oxidative stress that results in toxicity(Mates, Segura, Alonso, & Marquez, 2010). Previous studies have emphasized the roles that natural antioxidants, particularly those derived from medicinal plants, play in the prevention of TCDD toxicities(Du et al, 2017;Ilavarasi et al, 2015). For example, recent studies by our research group have shown that various flavonoids, including actein(Choi et al, 2017), 27-deoxyactein(Suh, Choi, Jung, et al, 2018) and xanthohumol(Suh, Choi, Kim, et al, 2018), inhibit TCDD-induced toxicity in MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cells.…”

“…Sandur et al [ 81 ] found that natural curcuminoid extracts from Curcuma longa exhibited more anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative activities than pure curcumin, curcumin derivatives and reconstituted curcuminoids. Recently, Suwannakul et al [ 82 ] and Ilavarasi et al [ 83 ] reported that extracts of purple rice bran and seaweed had the ability to attenuate the ABF1-induced initiation stage of hepatocarcinogenesis through alteration of XMEs and blockage of TCDD-induced toxicity, respectively.…”
