Antioxidant Capacity of Polyphenolic Extracts from Leaves of Crataegus laevigata and Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn) Subjected to Drought and Cold Stress

Abstract: Crataegus laevigata and Crataegus monogyna (hawthorn) were subjected to drought and cold stress treatments, and polyphenolic extracts from control and stress-treated plants were assayed for antioxidant capacities using a modified version of the Total Antioxidant Status Assay (Randox, San Francisco, CA). In addition, these plants were analyzed for levels of flavanol-type substance [(-)-epicatechin] and flavonoid (vitexin 2' '-O-rhamnoside, acetylvitexin 2' '-O-rhamnoside, and hyperoside) constituents that are i… Show more

“…Leaf TAC was remarkably altered after the plants were exposed to high UV-B radiation on day 1. Similar results were observed in Crataegus leaves subjected to drought and cold stress conditions (Kirakosyan et al, 2003). This substantial TAC increase in response to high UV-B radiation occurred before the reactive oxygen burst.…”

“…The antioxidant properties of carotenoids are due to their conjugated double bonds (Ramel et al, 2012). Each double bond in the carotenoid backbone can be oxidized by ROS and subsequently produces various aldehydes and ketones (Kirakosyan et al, 2003;Ramel et al, 2012). The content of carotenoid oxidative degradation products in the tobacco leaves exposed to high UV-B radiation, including 6-methylhept-5-en-2-one, isophorone, damascenone, and geranyl acetone, was increased compared with that in the control group (Xue et al, 2016).…”

“…39,40 Flavonoids and polyphenols are considered to be the active antioxidant groups in hawthorn extracts. 41 Additionally, the anti-inflammatory role of quercetin and isoquercetin in HBE in inhibiting inducible nitric oxide synthease and cyclooxygenase II in stimulated macrophages has been reported. 42,43 Statins are other anti-inflammatory medicines that may be indicated in the treatment of colitis.…”

“…However, it may defi nitely be stated that the antioxidant activity of the asparagus was comparable to that of extracts from other plants with documented antioxidant potential. Kirakosyan et al (2003) compared the activity of individual model polyphenolic solutions with the activity of ethanol extracts from hawthorn fruits. Those studies showed that extracts produced from hawthorn exhibited a very high capacity to inactivate ABTS cation radicals (radical scavenging activity of 2.3 mmol Trolox), almost 30% greater than free (−) epicatechin.…”
