Antioxidant capacity of lipid- and water-soluble antioxidants in dogs with subclinical myxomatous mitral valve degeneration anaesthetised with propofol or sevoflurane

Abstract: Background: Antioxidants located in both the hydrophilic and lipophilic compartments of plasma act as a defence system against reactive oxygen species (ROS). Excessive production of ROS during anaesthesia affects the antioxidant capacity of plasma and may result in oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of lipid-(ACL) and water-soluble (ACW) antioxidants in client-owned dogs diagnosed with periodontal disease and early-stage myxomatous mitral valve degeneration (MMVD) … Show more

“…Glutathione peroxidase activity remained unchanged in both groups ( 32 ). These results are in general agreement with clinical studies investigating oxidative stress in dogs with early-stage MMVD during propofol and sevoflurane anesthesia ( 9 , 44 ).…”

“…Tomsič et al ( 9 , 44 ) examined the effects of propofol on oxidative stress in dogs with early-stage myxomatous mitral valve degeneration (MMVD) undergoing periodontal treatment. In one study, the authors compared the effects of TIVA with propofol to anesthesia induced with propofol and maintained with sevoflurane on vitamin E, SOD, GPX, and lipid peroxidation marker malondialdehyde (MDA) ( 9 ).…”

“…Plasma ACL and ACW concentrations were measured as previously described ( 39 ) using a PHOTOCHEM analyzer and the reagent kits provided (Analytik Jena, Jena, Germany). Results are expressed in nmol equivalents of ascorbic acid in mL of sample for ACW and in nmol equivalents of Trolox (6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-carboxylic acid) in mL of sample for ACL.…”
