Antioxidant and α-Glucosidase Inhibitory Properties and Chemical Profiles of Moroccan Propolis

Abstract: The chemical profiles of propolis hydroalcoholic extracts from different regions of Morocco were studied by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry after silylation. Samples from Khamissat and Imouzzer belong to the poplar type, as typical poplar flavonoids predominated. Propolis from Rabat also contained high percentage of flavonoids, but had significantly lower amount of phenolic acid esters and contained no pinobanksin-3-O-acetate. Propolis from Bhalil demonstrated a profile rich in diterpenes (74.3… Show more

“…Although two samples of propolis studied by Popova et al . () were from the same city of those reported in the present work (2 and 9: Moulay Bousselhame; 8: Rabat), their activities were different. For the sample from Moulay Bousselham, the inhibitory activities, expressed as IC 50 values, of α‐glucosidase and α‐amylase were 0.07 and 0.52 mg mL −1 , respectively, while in the present work such IC 50 values for α‐glucosidase inhibitory activities ranged from without activity (sample 2) up to 0.027 mg mL −1 (sample 9).…”

“…For the sample from Rabat, Popova et al . () found 0.010 and 0.090 mg mL −1 as IC 50 values for α‐glucosidase and α‐amylase inhibitory activities, respectively, that is lower than those observed for sample 8 (0.032 and 1.36 mg mL −1 ) (Table ).…”

“…Phenolic esters were also among the principal groups of bioactive compounds found in Moroccan propolis. [22,121,122] From above, we can conclude that the reported chemical composition of propolis from different countries of Mediterranean basin is heterogenous. It is possible to find diterpenes, independent on their levels, in propolis samples from Italy (Sicily), Croatia, Malta, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt, Libya, Algeria and Morocco ( Table 1).…”
