Antioxidant and antimitotic activities of sulfated polysaccharide from marine brown algae Padina tetrastromatica

Abstract:
Antioxidants play a central role in the prevention of carcinogenesis. The most natural compounds exhibit their protective effects by eliciting antioxidant potential. Sulfated polysaccharide was isolated from the brown algae Padina tetrastromatica, then purified and evaluated for its composition and in vitro antioxidant and antimitotic activities. Both ethanolic sulfated polysaccharide (ESPS) and ethanolic sulfated polysaccharide-column purified… Show more

“…7 The chemical composition of SPS was already determined, 7 and it was well characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 7 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 8 ultraviolet (UV)–visible spectrum and gel permeation chromatography. 9 SPS was proved to have antioxidant, 7 immunomodulatory, 8 anticancer, 9 and anti-proliferative 10 activities. This study presents high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) data and the potential of SPS to enhance intracellular antioxidant machinery in L929 mouse fibroblast cells during hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 )-induced oxidative stress.…”

“…Edible brown algae Eisenia arborea have phlorofucofuroeckol-B, shown strong antioxidant activity, it suggests a potential use in antiallergic drug preparations [44]. The sulfated polysaccharides from Padina tetrastomatica have been used in Hakim and Patel Future Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (2020) 6:129 cancer treatment because it showed strong antioxidant and anti-mitotic activity [87]. A brown algae Sargassum vestitum has active compound fucoxanthin which showed antioxidant activity, it suggests possible use in the food and pharmaceutical field [5].…”
