Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activity of Zostera marina L. Extract

Abstract: Methanol crude extract of the sea grass Zostera marina L. and organic solvent fractions (n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water) were screened for antioxidant activity (total phenolic contents, DPPH scavenging activity, and reducing power) and antimicrobial activity against three human skin pathogens, two bacteria and a yeast; Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Candida albicans. Total phenolic contents and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity were hig… Show more

“…The proportion of n 2 3 PUFA detected in Z. marina and Z. noltei was approximately 40% of the total FAs; therefore, taking into account their FAs profile, both seagrasses can be considered to be a promising source of n 2 3 PUFA with valuable nutritional, pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. Z. marina had the highest radical scavenging activity (RSA) ( Table 1), which was lower than the RSA value previously reported for the ethyl acetate fraction of a crude methanol extract for the same species collected in Korea (Choi et al 2009). Z. marina also had a good capacity to chelate copper, although not iron (Table 1).…”

“…Taylor and Francis shall not be liable for any losses, actions, claims, proceedings, demands, costs, Alexandrium catenella, a dinoflagellate responsible for the occurrence of harmful algal blooms (Laabir et al 2013). Z. marina leaf extracts have antioxidant and antibiotic activities (Kim et al, 2004;Kolenchenko et al 2005;Choi et al 2009), while organic extracts of Z. noltei collected in the Central Mediterranean area had strong antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger (Ballesteros et al 1992). Some bioactive compounds have been isolated from Z. marina, such as apigenin-7-O-b-D-glucoside and chrysoeriol (Kim et al 2004).…”

“…No medicament is known from eelgrass but since intact leaves decay very slowly and are widely selected and used as roof materials, it may be a good resource for screening natural antibiotics and some studies have shown effective compounds with nematicidal and antibacterial activity from eelgrass extracts (Harrison 1982, Choi et al 2009, Liu et al 2010, Newmaster et al 2011, Wang et al 2012).…”
