Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory role of zingerone in ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity

Abstract: Alcoholic liver disease is a direct result of alcohol-induced hepatotoxicity coupled with impaired hepatic regenerative activity. Our aim of the study was to investigate the beneficial effect of zingerone on hepatic oxidative stress and inflammation induced by ethanol in experimental rats. Male albino Wistar rats were divided into four groups. Rats of groups 1 and 2 received isocaloric glucose and dimethyl sulfoxide (2 % DMSO). Hepatotoxicity was induced in groups 3 and 4 by supplementing 30 % ethanol post ora… Show more

“…A significant reduction of the enzymatic activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione reductase (GR) in chronic alcohol consuming animals was also observed in rats [38] and in serum of human patients [39] by other authors. The administration of I-ol and I-an in their lowest concentrations led to a sharp increase in the enzymatic activity of GPx, which could be correlated with a restoration of transcriptional regulation.…”

“…A Power Lab® system (AD Instruments, Bella Vista, Australia) linked to a PC executing LabChart professional software was used to record the ECG. The software was run with the ECG module to enable detection of the various ECG components [ 16 ]. QRS detection is based on methods described by Hamilton and Tompkins (Hamilton and Tompkins, 1986).…”

“…There are three main alcohol metabolic pathways in the liver: alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) [29], microsomal ethanol oxidation system (cytochrome P450 2E1) [30] and catalase [31]. Under conditions of chronic alcohol intake, the microsomal cytochrome P450 becomes activated and produces large amounts of aldehyde, 1-hydroxyethyl radical and other free radicals [32].…”
