Antioxidant and Anti-Cataract Effects of Chlorella on Rats with Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes

Abstract: The antioxidant activities of Chlorella in vitro and in vivo were investigated. Chlorella showed a strong antioxidant effect compared to various vegetables in a 1,1-diphe nyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. To evaluate the antioxidant and anti cataract effects in vivo, a 7.3% Chlorella powder was fed to rats with Streptozotocin-induced diabetes for 11wk. At the end of the experiment, Chlorella had decreased the blood glycated hemoglobin (hemoglobin Alc) and serum cholesterol levels significan… Show more

“…Furthermore, α and β-carotene in C. vulgaris not only react with various ROS but also interfere with the processes of oxidation in the lipid and cellular compartment [38]. Chlorella vulgar has many health-promoting benefits as antioxidant and lipid reduction in animals and humans [39] with free radical scavenging action [40,41].…”

“…Chemiluminescense (CL), generated via free radicals, is related to lipid peroxidation ( 19 ), and was determined as described by a previous study ( 18 ). The urinary 8-hydroxy-2 ′ -deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) concentration was measured using the 8-OHdG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit (Japan Institute for Control Aging, Shizuoka, Japan), and adjusted by urinary Cr values.…”

“…Some Chlorella species are widely used as a dietary supplement in many countries, especially in East Asia (e.g., Japan, Taiwan, Korea). Chlorella regularis has been reported to potentially prevent lifestylerelated diseases (Shibata et al, 2003;Shibata and Sansawa, 2006;Shibata et al, 2007). Chlorella powder (CP) made from C. regularis contains large amounts of carotenoids such as lutein, α-carotene, and β-carotene (approx.…”
