Antioxidant and anti cancer activities of brown and red seaweed extracts from Chilean coasts

Abstract: Laurencia chilensis and Chondracanthus chamissoi. The antioxidant capacity of these extracts was evaluated through three complementary assays: the TRAP, FRAP, and DPPH assays. Additionally, the cytotoxic activity of these extracts was determined through sulforhodamine B assays on two cancer cell lines, one colon (HT-29) and one breast (MCF-7), and one non-tumor control group of epithelial colon cells (CoN). The greatest antioxidant activity was detected in the ethyl acetate and dichloromethane extracts from L.… Show more

“…Our results, therefore, are in support of the lipophilic nature of D. dichotoma cytotoxic agents, whereby the cytotoxic activity of several algae was attributed to the presence of several nonpolar compounds particularly in the chloroform fraction [26,[30][31][32]. Other studies also showed that the nonpolar petroleum ether extract [33] as well as dichloromethane [34] of the algae were significantly effective against proliferating cells.…”

“…dichotoma are yet to be elucidated, many researchers believe that the wide array of diterpenes found in brown algae are involved [16,[34][35][36]. Hydroazulene diterpenes isolated from D. dichotoma were reported to be significantly cytotoxic to the cancerous murine cell line KA3IT [33].…”

“…20,21 This method has been widely used to evaluate antioxidant activities and has advantages over the other in vitro assays, including DPPH, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC). 2,[22][23] Keratinocytes are the major cells that make up the skin epidermis, which have a similar topology as the outer layer of the skin. Therefore, the antioxidant assay on HaCaT cells is more representative than the other in vitro methods.…”

“…For example, fucoxanthin, dimethylsultonipropionate have been described in Fucus vesiculosus as antibacterials (Saha et al, 2011;Svensson et al, 2013); and porphyrans and other polysaccharides have been characterized as antioxidant compounds in species of the genera Porphyra and Pyropia (Zhang et al, 2003;Zhao et al, 2006;Isaka et al, 2015). Recently, the presence of polyphenols, flavonoids and anthraquinones has also been demonstrated, which would have an antioxidant and anti-cancer activity in the seaweeds Desmarestia ligulata, Dictyota kunthii, Chondracanthus chamissoi and Laurencia chilensis (Miranda et al, 2018). In this context, our purpose was to identify compounds associated to desiccation stress tolerance mechanisms, but also those having a potential role as bioactive compounds under desiccation.…”
