Antioxidant Activity, Polyphenol Content, and Related Compounds in Different Fruit Juices and Homogenates Prepared from 29 Different Pomegranate Accessions

Abstract: Pomegranate juice is well known for its health beneficial compounds, which can be attributed to its high level of antioxidant activity and total polyphenol content. Our objective was to study the relationships between antioxidant activity, total polyphenol content, total anthocyanins content, and the levels of four major hydrolyzable tannins in four different juices/homogenates prepared from different sections of the fruit. To this end, 29 different accessions were tested. The results showed that the antioxida… Show more

“…Our results corroborate with numerous studies suggesting that pomegranate peel extract has more potential for health as a natural antioxidant-rich dietary supplement than arils extract. In previous studies Gill et al, (2000) than Tzulker et al, (2007) deduced that the antioxidant activity of pomegranate juice with higher levels of peel residues was two to twenty times higher than pomegranate juice prepared only with arils.…”

“…This power is attributed probably to the effect of hydrolysable tannins and an ellagitannin, known as punicalagin, present in all pomegranate cultivars (Tzulker et al, 2007). That's why significant inter-cultivar and interorgan variation was revealed in Table 1.…”

“…Aktywność przeciwutleniająca owoców granatu i składników w nich zawartych była przedmiotem wielu badań (Borochov-Neori i in., 2009;Gil i in., 2000;Mertens-Talcott i in., 2006;Sadeghi i in., 2009;Singh i in., 2002;Sudheesh i Vijayalakshmi, 2005;Tzulker i in., 2007). Na właściwości przeciwutleniające granatu wpływa wiele czynników, głównie są to: odmiana i stopień dojrzałości owoców, warunki klimatyczne uprawy oraz część anatomiczna owocu, która została poddana analizie.…”

“…Antioxidants are compounds that have the ability to scavenge free radicals and protect the human body from oxidative stress, the main key factor for the occurence of cancers and heart diseases [28]- [30]. Reference [31] stated that the antioxidant level in pomegranate juice was higher than found in many fruit juices, such as blueberry, cranberry, and orange.…”
