Antioxidant Activity of Some Furanocoumarins Isolated fromHeracleum persicum

Abstract: Antioxidants are important substances that possess the ability to protect the body from damage caused by free radical-induced oxidative stress. A variety of free-radical scavenging antioxidants exist within the body, many of which are derived from dietry sources such as fruits, vegetables, and teas. This paper describes a search for bioactive components in fruits of Heracleum persicum Desf. ex Fisher, which led to isolation of four furanocoumarins that exhibit antioxidant activity. The structure of the constit… Show more

“…In the case of angular furocoumarins C-8 shows signs suggesting his involvement with the furan ring, in the C-6's place. In angelicin (49), for example, C-6 and C-8 are δ C 108.0 and δ C 117.0 signals respectively, while in the psoralen the displacements are δ C 125.0 for C-6 and 93.8 to δ C C-8. Table 4 lists the 13 C NMR data from pyranocoumarins found until now in the Moraceae family.…”

“…A number of chemical constituents, such as alkaloids, volatile substances, terpenoids, triterpenes and furanocoumarins have been isolated from fruit and different part of the plant (Sefidkon et al 2002;Mojab and Nickavar 2003;Sefidkon et al 2004;Hajhashemi et al 2009). Because of the diversity of phytochemicals that are present in this plant, several evidence have shown the antimicrobial (Kousha and Bayat 2012), immunostimulatory (Sharififar et al 2009;Naeini et al 2013), lipid-modifying (Panahi et al 2011), anti-inflammatory (Hajhashemi et al 2009), anticonvulsant (Sayyah et al 2005) and antioxidant activity (Souri et al 2004) of Heracleum persicum.…”

“…known as Persian Hogweed or "Golpar", is an annual native plant to the Alborz region, the northern part of Iran with a wide distribution across the country. Its fruits are widely used as a spice and flavoring agent in foods and in the preparation of pickles (Amin, 1991) as well as carminative, antiseptic, digestive, analgesic, antioxidant and anticonvulsant herbal drug in Iranian traditional medicine (Souri et al, 2004;Sayyah et al, 2005;Radjabian et al, 2013).…”
