Antioxidant Activity of Flavonoid Rich Fraction of Ligaria cuneifolia (Loranthaceae)

Abstract: Ligaria cuneifolia (Ruiz & Pav.) Tiegh. (Loranthaceae), the 'Argentine mistletoe', is a hemiparasite species largely used in folk medicine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity using in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo methods. A screening of phenolics was performed by UV spectroscopy on different fractions. The antioxidant capacity was evaluated in vitro by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH *) assay on a crude extract (CE), ethyl acetate fraction (EAF), and aqueous fraction … Show more

“…Flavonoids are considered as natural antioxidants since they are part of the defense mechanism initiated by plants to counteract the toxic effects of free radicals. [14] In our study, the samples from July presented the highest amount of total flavonoid content (3.89 mg/g dw), which was significantly higher than the content of the samples from other months (2.15 ~2.54 mg/g dw) (Table 1). There was no significant difference in content of samples from August, September, October and November.…”

“…Bio‐guided fractionation is an important biotechnological strategy to identify new sources of antioxidant‐like compounds. For example, Dobrecky et al [36] . showed that fractionation of Ligaria cuneifolia extracts enhanced the content of total phenolics, flavonoids, hydroxycinnamic acids, along with total and condensed tannins.…”

“…After 10 min, the absorbance of the mixture was measured at 517 nm. A calibration curve was prepared using Trolox (vitamin E analogue) as standard, and results were expressed as nmol Trolox Eq/mg sample and DPPH inhibition percentage [ 23 ].…”
