Diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) is one of the nefarious pests of cruciferous crops. Crude extracts from six botanicals obtained using hexane by continuous hot percolation process in Soxhlet apparatus were evaluated for their effect on larval mortality, antifeedant, growth and development of second instar larvae of DBM. The results revealed that the antifeedant index of Sesbania grandiflora 5% was 20.82% followed by Swietenia macrophylla 5%, which had 15.61%. The larval mortality and adult emergence exhibited by S. grandiflora was (66.67% and 33.33% respectively) after 72 h of feeding on treated leaf. It was statistically on par with S. macrophylla, which had 63.33% larval mortality and 36.67% adult emergence. With regard to the developmental period of life stages, no significant difference was observed among the treatments. However, all the treatments were significantly superior over untreated check in prolonging the developmental period of DBM. It was concluded that the S. grandiflora and S. macrophylla hexane leaf extract 5% are promising botanicals against P. xylostella, as they possess insecticidal, antifeedant and growth inhibitory activity. These results open up the scope for further isolation of bioactive compounds and validation under field conditions, which would lead to formulation development, ultimately it can be incorporated as ecofriendly component in the integrated pest management strategies.

Cocoa shell is a waste of the cocoa processing industry, containing vitamin D, protein, fat, carbohydrates, and fiber as well as antioxidant compounds such as polyphenols. Fermentation and immersion processes are needed in post-harvest cocoa to create the distinctive taste and flavor of chocolate, as well as to produce cocoa bean shell powder, which is also good quality as a waste utilization. This study aims to determine the effect of fermentation and immersion processes on the antioxidant activity and characteristics of the cocoa bean shell powder (CBS). The research method used a completely randomized design (CRD) method with four treatments e.g. NFNI (Non Fermentation Non Immersion), NFI (Non Fermentation Immersion), FNI (Fermentation Non Immersion) and FI (Fermentation Immersion) with three replications. The results of the color parameters show that CBS has a yellow-red color with significantly different L* values following the order FNI > NFNI > FI > NFI and the a* and b* values following the order FNI < FI < NFNI < NFI. NFNI has the highest antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 12.93 ppm and total phenolic 4.33 g/100 g followed by NFI, FNI, and FI. The best treatment for texture, aroma and color parameters was FI with an average value above 7, and it also had overall appearance characteristics that were not significantly different from commercial cocoa powder.

One of the Fabaceae family that has potential as medicinal plant is the white Turi plant (Sesbania grandiflora (L.) Pers.).The purpose of this study was to determine the content of secondary metabolites which can be extracted using a various extraction methods.The extraction method used are digestion, percolation, reflux, soxhlet, infusion, and decoction extraction. The Turi plants used come from Mojosari, Mojokerto.The results of the initial phytochemical screening of white Turi leaf extract (Sesbania grandiflora (L.) Pers.) Were extracts in six extraction methods containing alkaloids, saponins and tannins.In extracts using the digestion, soxhlet, and reflux method containing steroids.Meanwhile, the four extracts from the digestion, percolation, soxhlet, and reflux methods contain phenolic.And the infusion and decoction method extracts containing flavonoids and triterpenoids. The similarity of the phytochemical test results for each extract but with different intensity results.
