Introduction: Olax imbricata, owning antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities, has been investigated as one of traditional diabetic plants in Vietnam. In our previous publications on Olax imbricata, the structure analysis of the isolated compounds were reported, including two phenolic compounds, three phenolic glycosidic compounds, a sesquiterpenoid tropolone and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene derivatives. This article described the isolation and structure elucidation of three triterpenoid glycosides isolated from the methanol extract of Olax imbricata growing in Phu Yen province. Additionally, the evaluation of inhibitory activity for α-glucosidase was performed on a pure compound. Method: The methanol extract of this plant applied the chromatographic techniques, including thin-layer chromatography and silica gel column chromatography, led to the isolation of three pure compounds. The structures of three isolated compounds were elucidated by the spectroscopic data, including 1D and 2D NMR spectra in a combination of HRESIMS, and the sugar moieties were elucidated by acid hydrolysis. The α-glucosidase inhibitory assay was applied to a pure compound by the colorimetric method. Results: Three triterpenoid glycosides, namely 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-β -D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)-6 ′ -O-ethyl-β -Dglucuronyl oleanolic acid (1), oleanolic acid 28-O-β -D-glucopyranoside (2) and spergulacin (3) were isolated and elucidated. The compound 2 showed its strong potential α-glucosidase inhibitory activity with the IC 50 value of 56.15 ± 1.31 µM. Conclusion: Among them, compound 1 is a new one, the compounds 2 and 3 were isolated for the first time from the genus Olax. The compound 2 exhibited the potential α-glucosidase inhibition activity, contributing to demonstrating the diabetes treatment ability of Olax imbricata in the folklore.

Background: An aphrodisiac can be defined as any type of food or drink that is capable of causing sexual desire or arousal, increase sexual potency and increase sexual pleasure. The use of synthetic aphrodisiacs results in unwanted side effects that are noxious to the patients, thus there is a growing need to look for aphrodisiacs of herbal origin with lesser side effects. Aim: The aim of the study is to conduct an Ethnobotanical survey of medicinal plants used as aphrodisiacs in Bauchi Local Government area. Methods: Traditional medical practitioners with expertise in management of sexual problems were interview using a well structured ethnobotanical questionnaire Results: Medicinal plants such as Waltheria indica, Trephrosia purpurea, Hygrophilla auriculata, Gardiena erubescense, Olax subscorpioidea, Fadogia agrestis, Hymenocardia acida, Sabo et al.; JOCAMR, 4(4): 1-13, 2017; Article no.JOCAMR.39229 2 Borassus aethiopum, Dichrostachys cinerea and Cyperus esculentus were identified to be used singly as aphrodisiacs. Conclusion: All plants should be investigated scientifically to substantiate the traditional claims except Fadogia agretis which was pharmacologically proven to possess aphrodisiac activity. Antidepressant and Anxiolytic Effects of Alcoholic Extract From Tephrosia Pumila (L.) Pers

Tephrosia pumila (L.) Pers (Leguminosae (Fabaceae)), is an herbaceous climber that has been generally utilized in Indian traditional medicine for the treatment of different central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Nevertheless, the available scientific information about this species is rare and there are no reports identified with its conceivable impact on the CNS. In this work, the effects of ethanolic extract of Tephrosia pumila (L.) Pers (TPP) were assessed in rats utilizing behavioral tests sensitive to clinically effective antidepressant and anxiolytic effects compounds. The extract (200 and 400mg/kg), administered intraperitoneally, was able to decrease the immobility time of rats dose-dependently when subjected to both tail suspension and forced swim tests for antidepressant activity and elevated Pluse maze test, actophotometer test for anxiolytic effect and the effects are comparable to that of standard drugs i.e., Diazepam (20mg/kg). Neither the extracts of TPP and Diazepam, at the doses tested, produced significant effects on locomotor activity when subjected to open field behavioral test. These results demonstrated that TPP had specifically antidepressant effects in vivo. In conclusion, the present study recommended that TPP extracts possessed potential antidepressant and anxiolytic effects which could be of therapeutic interest for using in the treatment of patients with depressive disorders.
