Antinociceptive effect of Encholirium spectabile: A Bromeliaceae from the Brazilian caatinga biome

Abstract: Background:Encholirium spectabile is a species found in outcrops rocky throughout the Brazilian Caatinga. Objective:This study was carried out to evaluate the antinociceptive effects of ethanolic extract of the leaves from E. spectabile (Es-EtOH) in mice using chemical and thermal models of nociception.Material and Methods:HPLC was used to determine the fingerprint chromatogram. The Es-EtOH was examined for its antinociceptive activity at the doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg intraperitoneal (i.p.). The evaluatio… Show more

“…Nesse contexto, a amplitude da população idosa assume uma importância crucial nas políticas públicas e na sociedade em geral. Isso se deve ao fato de que, ao se tornarem mais vulneráveis a alterações no estado de saúde e a dependências para as atividades diárias, eles se tornam mais propensos a situações de violência, aumentando significativamente a probabilidade de internação (Bittencout;Silva, 2018;Almeida;Aguiar, 2011).…”

“…The low toxicity of the compounds present in E. spectabile , associated with the existence of phytosterols, fatty acids, and the strong presence of vitamin E in the leaves emphasize this plant as a nutritional source for humans and animals (7). No reports of the use of E. spectabile in folk medicine have been found in the literature so far; however, pharmacological/biological studies demonstrate that extracts of this plant have antioxidant, photoprotective, antinociceptive, gastroprotective and antibacterial activity against Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative (8–10).…”

“…Because of its vast distribution, it is considered today as the Bromeliad with the largest habitat [9]. In Mexico, there are 426 species of Bromeliaceae [10] and some are widely known, such as pineapple ( Ananas comosus ), and others have already been studied for pharmacological purposes [11,12,13,14,15,16] and part of their composition has already been elucidated [17,18]. H. glomerata is used both as a source of food and in ethnomedicine to treat various infections including bronchitis, laryngitis, nephritis, whooping cough, urethritis, and sepsis [19,20,21,22].…”
