Different parts of the medicinal plant Zanthoxylum budrunga Wall enjoy a variety of uses in ethnobotanical practice in Bangladesh. In the present study, a number of phytochemical and pharmacological investigations were done on the ethanol extract of Z. budrunga seeds (ZBSE) to evaluate its antinociceptive and antioxidant potential. ZBSE was also subjected to HPLC analysis to detect the presence of some common antioxidants. In acetic acid induced writhing test in mice, ZBSE showed 65.28 and 74.30% inhibition of writhing at the doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg and the results were statistically significant (P < 0.001). In hot-plate test, ZBSE raised the pain threshold significantly (P < 0.001) throughout the entire observation period. In DPPH scavenging assay, the IC50 of ZBSE was observed at 82.60 μg/mL. The phenolic content was found to be 338.77 mg GAE/100 g of dried plant material. In reducing power assay, ZBSE showed a concentration dependent reducing ability. HPLC analysis indicated the presence of caffeic acid with a concentration of 75.45 mg/100 g ZBSE. Present investigation supported the use of Zanthoxylum budrunga seed in traditional medicine for pain management. Constituents including caffeic acid and other phenolics might have some role in the observed activity.

Supercritical CO 2 fluid extraction (SFE-CO 2 ) of Zanthoxylum bungeanum (Z. bungeanum) seed oil was investigated. To optimize the SFE process, three-level Box-Behnken factorial design and response surface methodology (RSM) were applied to optimize the extraction conditions, including pressure, temperature and amount of modifier. The optimum conditions were as follows: extraction pressure, 29.28 MPa; extraction temperature, 41.19°C; and the added amount of modifier, 10.94%. The experimental results showed that the maximum extraction yield was 21.85 ± 0.23% (n = 3) under the proposed conditions. The compositional analysis of Z. bungeanum seed oil was performed by HPLC-FLD-MS using a new labeling reagent of 2-(11H-benzo[a]carbazol-11-yl)-ethyl-4-methyl benzenesulfonate (BCETS). The results indicated that the Z. bungeanum seed oil contained mainly unsaturated fatty acids, including C18:3, C22:6, C20:4, C18:2, C18:1 and C20:1, which accounted for 84.0% (mass percentage) of the total amount. The antioxidant activity of seed oil obtained by Box-Behnken design concerning the DPPH radical was investigated, and this indicated that the pressure and the amount of added modifier had positive effects on the antioxidant activity, but the effect of the temperature elevation is complicated, depending on the nature of the extracted contents.

Zanthoxylum rhetsa DC (Rutaceae), commonly called prickly ash, is used in the folk medicine of Naga tribes in India as a deworming remedy. In the present study, the therapeutic efficacy of Z. rhetsa leaf extract was investigated against experimental Hymenolepis diminuta (Cestoda) infections in albino rats. The efficacy of extract was determined on the basis of reduction in the eggs per gram of feces (EPG) counts and worm load following treatment with 100, 200, 400 and 800 mg/kg, p.o. doses of plant extract. For comparison's sake, animals were also treated with a reference drug, praziquantel at 5 and 25 mg/kg body weight doses. Three treatment regimes were followed to monitor the effects of extract on cestode parasite: (1) Treatment on day 2-4 postinoculation (pi) of cysticercoids against the larval stages; (2) treatment on day 8-10 pi against the immature stages; and (3) treatment on day 21-25 pi against the adult stages of parasite. The extract revealed its maximum efficacy against the larval stage, where its 800 mg/kg dose showed a worm count reduction of 86.60%, compared to 80.00% by the reference drug, praziquantel (5 mg/kg dose). The EPG counts also decreased drastically from 23,389 ± 2,372 to 0 in the same treatment group, compared to 33,161 ± 1,383 recorded in the control group. The efficacy of extract was found to be of moderate level against the immature and adult stages of parasite. The present investigation holds the evidence that the leaves of Z. rhetsa possess significant anticestodal property and supports its use in folk medicine.
