Antinociceptive Activity ofZanthoxylum piperitumDC. Essential Oil

Abstract: Zanthoxylum piperitum DC. (ZP) is a traditional medicinal plant used mainly in countries from Asia such as Japan. This study aimed to investigate the antinociceptive effect of ZP essential oil (ZPEO). The major component present in the essential oil was beta-phellandrene (29.39%). Its antinociceptive activity was tested through animal models (formalin-, capsaicin-, and glutamate-induced paw licking and hot plate). The anti-inflammatory effect was evaluated through the carrageenan-induced leukocyte migration in… Show more

“…Among candidates, we focused on the Zanthoxylum piperitum (Z. pipertium). Z. piperitum has been traditionally used as a pain-relieving herb in Asian countries including Korea and the anti-nociceptive activity is experimentally confirmed 9 . Besides, Z. piperitum tastes tingling and numbing, similar to the symptoms of weak paralysis.…”

“…Prostaglandin is an important product of arachidonic acid by cyclooxygenase enzyme. Majority of the cyclooxygenase enzyme inhibitors are recognized as active painkillers, also as anti-in ammatory agents [26,27]. It is a big challenge for a researcher to discover new potent and less or nontoxic inhibitors.…”

“…Spinacetin (1) and patuletin (2) also attenuated in ammation in both tested models, i.e., carrageenan and histamine. Carrageenan paws edema model consists of two phases: the initial phase edema is recognized to the local release of histamine serotonin and bradykinins while the further phase is due to overproduction of PG [27]. In the tested model, spinacetin (1) and patuletin (2) exhibited signi cant analgesic activity against the standard drug.…”

“…Zanthoxylum piperitum essential oil was tested in an animal model setting. The outcomes of the 2016 study demonstrated some remarkable primary effects on the first phase of the formalin-induced licking, glutamate, and hot plate tests; however, these positive conclusions did not endure throughout the study as the oil did not affect reducing paw licking induced by capsaicin or against inflammation induced by carrageenan, as observed through further testing in the same study [50].…”
