Antineoplasic Effect of Aqueous Extract of Plectranthus Amboinicus in Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma

Abstract: There are 46,000 new cases of peritoneal carcinomatosis per year in the USA and 17,700 in Brazil. New media, including plant derivatives, are being tested in its treatment. Plectranthus amboinicus is a medicinal plant widely used in Brazil, especially in the northeast region, for the treatment of various diseases, including cancer. This present study evaluates the intraperitoneal use of aqueous extracts of Plectranthus amboinicus (AEPa) at a dose of 200 mg / kg for the treatment of the ascitic form of Ehrlich … Show more

“…69,70 For example, a carvacrol-thymol chemotype showed activity on lung cancer cell line A549 71 and an aqueous extract produced antineoplastic effect in ascetic form of Ehrlich carcinoma in mice. 72 In the follow-up assay with cancer cell lines, a statistically significant higher activity (P > .05) of carvacrol with respect to EO-Pa was found. However, these differences are minimal, and thus not relevant in term of efficacy, which suggest that the anticancer properties of EO-Pa could also be attributed to the presence of carvacrol, which can be visualized in Figure 3.…”

“…The highlight of the current study is that groups treated with A. carnosus extracts revealed remarkable anti-tumor activity even at low doses such as 30, 50, and 100 mg/kg b. wt. In the past, several studies[ 24 25 26 27 ] have reported good anti-tumor activity in vivo with EAC model although with comparatively higher doses of the anti-cancer agent. Also, previous studies on A. carnosus have revealed the plant to possess strong anti-tumor activity with its ethanolic and petroleum ether extract exhibiting potent anti-tumor activity in vitro against cancer cell lines such as BT-549 (human mammary ductal carcinoma)[ 28 ] and A-549 (human alveolar adenocarcinoma).…”
