Antimycobacterial Activity of Lichens

Abstract: Ethanol extracts of nine lichen species, namely Everniastrum cirrhatum (Fr.) Hale ex Sipman (Parmeliaceae), Flavoparmelia caperata (L) Hale (Parmeliaceae), Heterodermia leucomela (L) Poelt (Physciaceae), Lecanora flavidorufa Hue (Lecanoraceae), Leptogium pedicellatum P.M. Jorg (Collemataceae), Lobaria isidiosa (Bory) Trevisan (Stictaceae), Rimelia reticulata (Taylor) Hale and Fletcher (Parmeliaceae), Phaeophyscia hispidula (Ach.) Essl (Physciaceae), and Stereocaulon foliolosum Nyl. (Stereocaulaceae), were eval… Show more

“…However, GC-MS gave good results with mono-aromatic compounds in an oak moss absolute fraction, 11 identification and quantification of atraric acid, 12 and the fatty acids of the genus Collema lichens. 13 Only HPLC fingerprints of various lichen species 5 have been exploited to date, whereas, to the best of our knowledge, there have been no attempts at …”

“…Out of all lichen species under investigation, some of the selected species have already been investigated for antimicrobial or enzyme inhibitory activities [22, 23], but little is known about their antioxidant capacities. In addition, as an approach to their anticancer potential, we aimed to determine their cytotoxic effects on two human cancer cell lines (the hepatocellular carcinoma-derived HepG2 and the breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 cell line).…”

“…Many of the interesting lichen substances are aromatic polyketides [5] with marked antioxidative properties [6] conferring: allelopathy properties against bacteria [7][8][9] and fungi [10,11] and enabling specific pharmacological applications as photoprotection [12,13] cardioprotection [14] neuroprotection [15] antiviral [16] and antitumoral applications [9,17] in mammals by modulating intracellular concentration of hydrogen peroxide [18]. While lichen substances have interest by the properties exhibited, these substances have had importance in lichen determination by identifying lichen substances as a character in chemotaxonomy.…”
