Antimigratory effect of berberine in T98G, U87MG and primary glioma cell culture.

Abstract: e15045 Background: Berberine is an alkaloid compound with a structure that is highly similar to that of intercalating agents. It affects numerous cell signaling pathways and is widely studied as potential anticancer drug. It is known that berberine affects cancer cells migration through metalloproteinase-2 inhibition, but this effect was never studied on glioma cells. Anti-migratory drugs are of special interest in brain cancer therapy since glioma's highly invasive nature makes total surgical removal of tumo… Show more

“…At present, cancer treatment mainly includes surgical resection, chemotherapy [19], radiotherapy [20], interventional therapy [21], immunotherapy [22], photothermal therapy [23], photodynamic therapy [24] and combined therapy [25]. Among them, surgical treatment directly removes the tumor, but it also has its limitations, such as the risk of an incomplete resection of the tumor, leading to its recurrence and metastasis, damage to healthy tissues and increased risk of infection [26]. Combination therapy is an approach recommended to increase the efficacy of a treatment, to reduce its duration and to prevent the development of drug resistance.…”
